FROM BAD TO WORSE

You may recall a bit back Jason Van Steenwyk did a great bit of spade work by finding a series of outlets that had taken General Mattis' comments out of context, very badly so.

Well, now the New York Times has issued a correction.

Changing the word "men" to "Marines." But leaving the context uncorrected.

Do you laugh or do you cry?

From Ann Coulter's 'Treason', citing Susan Tifft & Alex Jones 'The Trust: The
Private and Powerful Family Behind the New York Times':
"...current publisher of the New York Times, Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger, a
college student ... at the time, was asked by his father, the then-publisher of
the Times, whom he would want to see shot if an American soldier came face-to-
face with a North Vietnamese soldier, "I would want to see the American guy get
shot," Pinch said. "It's the other guy's country."
And you wonder why the NY Times seems biased?

In fairness, you need to ask how old he was and what the country was going through when he said that. Raise your hand if you didn't say something in your early twenties that, looking back, you're pretty sure today was pretty damn STUPID. If I got tagged with everything I'd said I'd be too embarrassed to leave the house.

1) Has he since repudiated that statement, either through words or actions?
2) Even under the influence of alcohol (and/or other substances), while watching tv in the Morrison dorm lounge, waiting for the 1971 draft numbers to be drawn, I doubt I ever said anything THAT stupid (but I will admit it is possible that I just don't remember it.)
