As you've no doubt heard by now, the White House and Capitol were evacuated when a small plane flew into restricted air space. (The all clear has since been sounded.) All three cable networks are now wall-to-wall on this story.
(I wasn't at home until after the all clear had sounded, but at least now, despite F-16s having been scrambled, the networks are currently ignoring the situation. Perhaps they were mentioning it before. If anyone knows, please do drop a comment.)
But here's the thing: with Wolf Blitzer anchoring CNN's coverage, their Homeland Security correspondent, Kelli Arena, reports by phone that they are being cautioned to by various law enforcement officials to remember that during Ronald Reagan's funeral a plane flew into restricted air space and it turned out to belong to the Governor of Kentucky. This plane will be forced down and the pilot interviewed, but she (Ms. Arena) cannot and will not speculate beyond that because it would not be appropriate at this time.
That's right. I didn't get her precise wording down, but a reporter just went on the air during a big breaking story when the network was looking to fill air time and information was scarce, and refused to keep talking just to fill up air time even though she didn't have information. She contributed what she knew and then stopped.
This behavior is so rare and so useful there's just gotta be some kind of award for that.
In point of fact, all the networks are being careful to bring up the incident during the funeral, while also being clear that such a situation has to be taken seriously. This is being neither hyped nor downplayed.
Not bad.
