Details, Details
General Jay Hood last week announced that the military had been able to confirm a small number of instances in which US military personnel had "mishandled" Korans, some intentional and some not, but declined to release any details.
Tonight details are released, but so are details of three times as many incidents in which detainees treated Korans in far more deliberately disrespectful fashion -- including urinating on one.
But what makes the headline and first 6 paragraphs of AP's story?
"US Confirms Gitmo Soldier Kicked Quran."
Sure enough, I had my local CBS affiliate on in the background (mainly because I haven't had the energy to get up and turn it off) and their "reporting" of the story (which consisted of reading a few sentences) involved no mention that any detainee did anything whatsoever worthy of mention.
(By the way, the AP story is far too unclear about the fact that the details being released concern incidents already announced, not an announcement of an entirely new set of incidents.)
Update: Well, at least AP includes the information on what the detainees did. Take a look at Reuters even more salacious headline, then compare it to the somewhat less-than-salacious story in the body of the story.
Update: Fox News' 7am headlines mention the "urnine splash" incident, but not the incident of a detainee intentionally urinating on a Koran.
Isn't that even more spectacular and salacious? You know they get both wire services. Do they not read past the first few paragraphs?
Now "Fox and Friends" (oh, hush, it's a Saturday) are discussing the story, and they're only discussing the incidents when US personnel mishandled the book.
Update: Credit where credit's due department: via Michelle Malkin (who has a roundup of blogger response up) comes this CNN headline, "Detainees, not soldiers, flushed Quran."
Fox now mentions a detainee putting pages in a toilet. It's odd, they're going out of their way to push the line that most of these incidents were unintentional, that the contract employee was fired, that the small number of incidents shows that respect is practiced at Gitmo -- but no mention of the magnitude of detainee practices, which seems at least as great a contextualizing factor.
Update: You know, I hate to be cynical (oh, right, you've met me) but as I look at all these stories that don't exactly put the emphasis where the Pentagon would want it, listen to broadcast stories (on Fox) that don't mention detainee bad behavior, I can't help but notice how many of them take pains to point out that this information was released after regular business hours on Friday.
Boy, is the press ticked about that.
Ticked enough that if they thought that was a Pentagon attempt to bury this they might, er, send a little message of their own back about who controls the frame of the news?
