Color Me Shocked

Although UN investigators need more time -- and need for Syria to actually cooperate -- the preliminary report makes Syrian participation in the assassination of Lebanese former prime minister Rafik Hariri pretty clear. It was, of course, that assassination that set off the "cedar revolution" that eventually ended Syrian occupation of Lebanon. Note the fact that the Syrian patsy taped his "confession" several weeks before the bombing actually took place.

Update: Oh, hold on, as you might expect the Post's coverage is much more detailed and useful.

One thing we all should take note of is the last paragraph:

Mehlis [the UN investigator] warned that many Lebanese fear the international community may not follow through, leaving them vulnerable to the return of Syrian military and intelligence services and a revenge campaign. Recent bombings and assassinations have been carried out "with impunity," deterring potential witnesses from testifying, he said.
