The Butcher of Ramadi: Fox Only

Yesterday the people of Ramadi brought an extremely wanted al Queda target -- with the colorful nickname "the Butcher of Ramadi" -- in, that's right, turned him in to US and Iraqi forces in Ramadi. Yes, yes, you don't report when a plane lands safely, who cares how many schools have been rebuilt, all you care about is the progress of the war -- so does good news in the progress of the war also fall outside the legitimate purview of the press?

Can you imagine that standard applied to the campaigns in Europe after D-Day?

It does suggest one might have gotten a slightly distorted view of events. (Imagine the American public shocked to discover her Armies actually in Berlin.)

There are implications to be teased out of this news. It's a story worth reporting and worth examining.

But there's nothing in the Post on Ramadi today, nothing that I see in the Times, despite a story on the use of informants to find suspected insurgents in the same province.

I don't think it was mentioned on the networks last night. (CBS ran a story, to their credit, about the progress on the airport road, but of course that story could have run any night. NBC ran a piece on footage of contracters apparently shooting at civilians. To be clear either may have mentioned it before those pieces began and I wouldn't have heard it given my surfing between networks.)

Once again, Fox is what it is, but it provides a critical alternative voice. If not for Fox, that which the primary gatekeepers decided was not newsworthy, we might simply never hear about.)
