John Grisham does a service by reminding that Katrina didn't only hit New Orleans. The networks have actually done a decent job of keeping the story alive, but "the story" continues to mean, for them, almost exclusively New Orleans. (NBC, for example, has established a "New Orleans bureau," not a "Gulf Coast bureau.") Fox, I notice, just this last week has focused on the Gulf coast, a bit however.
Yet Grisham's piece, interestingly, makes note of volunteers continuing to stream south (including volunteers from Canada) despite the lack of coverage.

Thank you John Grisham and readers. We do need help here. Bridges and infrastructure, of course, but manual labor also. Trucks pick up debris on roadsides, but it's often very hard to get it to the roadside, especially tree trunks, carports, plywood, furniture, etc. The volunteers have been absolutely wonderful and prioritize according to the most needy, but the less needy need help too.

Thanks for commenting, and please visit back when you can. Not many people can volunteer to go down there, but there may be other ways people can contribute: let us know.

PLEASE DON'T FORGET US – By: Michelle A. Grant-Preston

Thank you John! There are so many people that are in the same situation today as they were in September 2005, the days following Hurricane Katrina. Almost a year later we are still trying to reclaim our lives and facing a new hurricane season to battle again, coming soon. Many of the people in our community will be battling from tents, trailers, and if they were among the lucky ones, from a home still damaged and a roof still covered by tarps. What will remain if another Katrina hits?.... NOT MUCH! Please keep telling our story. Thank you.
