Perspective

The Times publishes a piece with a broader sense of perspective than is usually seen in her Good, Gray pages. Well worth a read.

Cori, thanks for the link to Owen West's NYT piece - really excellent.

As to why the West piece is so perceptive -- you likely already know this, but some readers may not. Ex-Marine Owen West is the son of ex-Marine and former assistant SecDef Bing West. Owen served a tour in Iraq, while Bing West has embedded in Iraq at least four times.

As writers they share a website [which unfortunately they do not keep fully up to date with their article links].

Borrowing from my post yesterday, Bing West is again filing dispatches from Iraq. These are an excellent source of perspective on current status, and What Lies Ahead, filed May 25th.

West has been on patrol in Baghdad, Fallujah and Ramadi - arguably the worst locales in Iraq today. In this latest dispatch West surveys what he has learned about the core problem with Iraqi leadership, plus what to watch for to gauge the progress of the Iraqi army and police, and a workable compromise between the Shiite-majority government and local Sunni insurgents.

Thanks for that -- I've mentioned Bing West's writings here several times, but just hadn't made the connection.
