Some Days You Can't Win For Losin'

Unbelievable.

An article in the Post reports that there have been more deaths from accidents caused by roll-overs caused by up-armored humvees than were saved by the extra armor. At least so says one vehicle expert.

Too bad the press, of course, lacks a sense of irony.

Will they now excoriate the military for endangering the troops by over-armoring their vehicles, and demand to know when the dangerous armor will be removed from the entire humvee fleet?

In military affairs, there are very few (if any) unmitigated improvements--everything is a trade-off (more body armor vs mobility/endurance, more weight vs less range, etc.) Wish more people would understand that before spouting off.

It would have been better to make the vehicles safer with the armor in the design rather than slapping on steel in an ad hoc fashion, leading to the roll-over problems. This doesn't excuse the military in any way - the vehicles should have been dedigned to use more armor. But, "you use what you got."
